This is the opening scene from Waking of Ned Devine (1998), one of my favorite 90's style movies. The scene is crucial for introducing two of the main characters, the milieu of the little town, as well as the humorous tone of the film. I enjoy this scene, and chose it particularly because of its ability to alternate between tension and humor--something i have been trying to improve in my own work. This comical alternation was best achieved through the cinematography and music, so my efforts were aimed at mimicking the lighting and camera movements the best i could, and hoping that the music would add the final touch. With the help of Marshal, as DP, (and our iPhone lights when needed) we actually matched almost every single shot dead on.
Although the acting was a little more difficult to direct, i am pretty happy with the final product, and think the tension and humor come out very nicely. Visually we achieved the movement, primarily with the dollies and opening pan in an effective way. Thanks to the pre-production we were able to lean on the ideas of professionals, and achieve the same effect. Good stuff.
